Best book on Christianity

I have read many books on Christianity and this one is by far the best. It presents the message of Christ in its essence, making it an excellent tool for explaining the Christian faith to those around us. I’ve already ordered a copy for a relative. Will it bring him to faith? By itself probably not, but it has better than even chances of leading him to open the Bible and read God’s word which is where truth lives and lives are transformed. I heartily recommend this book to believers, seekers and the simply curious. It can be read in a few short hours and the reader will find himself well rewarded no matter what his spiritual state.

There will be an answer, but not necessarily to let it be.

My late father, Rev. Clair S. Clark, came to his ministry through the Methodist Church as a multitalented WW2 veteran, and we grew up valuing books and learning. He kept two small books within an arm’s reach without having to look: “The Discipline” (rule book for our church), and this book,”Your God Is Too Small” for guidance when he came to a difficult or challenging decision to make. He read, he prayed, and then he worked confidently. Perhaps I can still use his example.

The book study group at my ELCA (Lutheran) church read this spiritual classic last fall and really enjoyed it. I had read it in college in the 50's and wasn't sure if it would have stood the test of time, but it did so. While some of the writing sounded "dated" - the message was still important and worth reading/discussing. Highly recommended for open-minded study groups like ours.

The Last Straw

With so many divisions within Christianity this book puts it all into perspective. The two great commandments to love God and to love your fellow beings are all that really count. Anything else is in the noise and not cause for debate or discussion. God is so much greater than anything we can even imagine. Although I attended church and was baptized at 12, my true belief has not come until recently and I'm 71. The two Rabbi Jesus books introduced my deeper belief and this was the book that clinched it. I highly recommend it for all Christians. It was the last straw that broke this camel's unbelief.

Breaks down our conceptions of God... and builds up something better

This book is a fairly straightforward read, which would commend itself to an adult forum (or even young adults, for that matter.) Phillips undercuts most of the 'bad arguments' which inform our views of God ("Does God understand how radar works?") in the first half of the book, and builds up a far stronger understanding of God in the latter half.A word to the wise: this was written a half-century ago, and to many younger readers the prose might seem obtuse or opaque at times.

Startling Direct Statement of What Christianity Is All About

Stripping away the needless doctrinal details of the various denominations, Phillips focusses brilliantly on the fundamental Christian story and its revolutionary but simple way of life. The book is divided into two parts, the destructive and the constructive. In the first part, Phillips lays waste twelve limiting, sometimes paralyzing, ideas of God in Jesus name, ideas such as the "cosmic policeman," or the "God of 100%" or the "Gentle Jesus meek and mild." They are all worth understanding, unraveling, and disposing of.In the second part of the book, the incarnation of God in the form of Jesus is explained in such a direct and convincing way that believer and unbeliever alike will appreciate the Christian model with perfect clarity. If you want the ESSENCE of Christian teaching, minus all the extraneous trappings, and told in a wonderfully simple way, this is the book for you!"Reviewed by Jeremiah Cox, author of REDESIGNING GOD

But you have to love those post-WWII British theologians

This book does not have chapters. It is written as an outline which makes it a bit hard to follow sometimes. But you have to love those post-WWII British theologians! They have a worldview literally forged under fire which creates a nice balance to modern theological writing.

Mature Christian's will love this

I loved the challenge he presents as why keep God in a neat tiddy box of our own comfort level. When we allow God to be who he is we are free to be who we are, His children.

Theology

The title on its own is worth the cost ! Phillips, in effect, is calling for mature faith, which does not limit the Almighty. One could say he is attacking the childish faith of so many - but not the childlike faith, which, paradoxically, helps us to see God in his truegreatness.
