Q: What length or size of magazine will fit in the magazine compartment? It seems shorter than other bags?

it will fit 9mm 15 round double stacks and 10 round double stack mags of .45acp if you have extended Glock mags or something like that I would put them in the main compartment

Q: Does this bag have a solid bottom plate?

I have a similar bag and I dropped a piece of masonite hardboard inside the bag. I rounded the corners with a scroll saw and then filed the edges to round them a bit to prevent it from cutting the bag. You could also add automobile door guard strips to the board's edge.
