Q: How far from the main unit can this be?

I had to move my main unit to a more centralised position because I could not reliably connect to all my intellitags. My house is rather old and has thick walls. I would say no more than 20m.

Q: Is it waterproof and will it work on a gate?

Actually this product can be placed outside as has an IP 54 rating so ok for splashing water "Water splashing against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effect." but you couldn't submerge in water

Q: Is this a stand alone unit? Or requires purchase of base unit to connect to your wireless network and phone?

yes it needs base unit, connects all sensors by internet

Q: Is it one unit per house or a unit per door/window?

One per door/window. A bit like a magnetic opening sensor.

Looks really flimsy when actually installed, doesn't have heft and presence of a normal motion sensor, but works really well, doesn't pick up our cat, who is particularly large, but picks up people walking across the landing.
