Q: Is this black or photo black? when reading the description below all of the hoopla, it is described as photo black. i need just plain black.

I have had this problem REPEATEDLY. I’m not sure where the breakdown is occurring. When I order the BLACK XL cartridge, I keep getting the regular-sized PHOTO BLACK smaller cartridge. And you are right. It should NOT be that complicated, but someone is definitely screwing up and, therefore, is making it INCREDIBLY complicated. I just go to Staples in person now and open the box before I will buy it. Ridiculous.

Q: Does the XL fit in the same slot as the standard cartridge? Not sure how it would fit.

NO, it does not fit into an XP-830. The tabs on the bottom of the cartridge do NOT match that on the full-sized cartridge and therefor will not click into an 830's 410XL slot

Q: How much capacity does the XL cartridge have over the regular cartridge? Would you be better off buying 2 regular cartridges?

Not sure if my answer will help. I buy the XL mainly due to convenience. We do not have stores that sell ink nearby so I opt for a longer lasting amount of ink. It would seem two cartridges may be the answer but more cash outlay at once. Now that you have asked the question I should crunch those numbers for myself. Sorry if I wasn't much help..

THe photo black is the narrow cartridge from Epson and the regular black is the wider one (thicker). You have to make sure you check the correct one. THey are all 410 or 410XL which contains more ink than the 410. Hope this helps.
